Early monitoring of heart attack risk factors key, study says

A new study in the New England Journal of Medicine may make you think twice before you eat those fried chicken wings or have a steak.

Doctors often say you have to keep your blood pressure and cholesterol in check, but new research shows just how important that can be.

“It really shows the importance of watching things from the early stage to the later stage,” said Dr. Paul Sorlie at the National Institutes of Health.

The study found that having just one risk factor can increase your chance of a heart attack or stroke, but having two or more makes it six times more likely you’ll die before you turn 80.

The risk factors are high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking and diabetes.
