Libyan Canadians celebrate Gadhafi’s death

Libyans in Canada celebrated the news of Moammar Gadhafi’s death Thursday, saying this brings an end to a long, dark chapter in their history.

Nada Basir, with the Canadian Libyan Council, said this was a moment her people have been waiting for, for over 40 years.

“Initially, it’s a little disbelief, and now that we’ve seen the pictures, reality is sinking in,” Basir said. “The extreme atrocities committed by his regime; the absolute hate for this man and what he has done.”

She said she’s received phone calls from friends who are happy and excited. Her grandfather said he’s just glad he got to live to see this day.

In Toronto, a celebration is being planned for 9 p.m. at Yonge-Dundas Square.

Gadhafi, 69, was killed Thursday in his hometown of Sirte, nearly two months after rebel forces toppled his regime and drove him from the capital city of Tripoli.
