Winter conditions cause litany of collisions

Black ice and snow covered roads were the cause of multiple accidents on the roads this weekend.

RCMP responded to a rollover accident in Kentville that brought traffic to a crawl in the region.

Police were also on the scene of multiple accidents in Kings and Annapolis Valley, also due to blowing snow and black ice.

Bad conditions were also reported in Hants and Lunenburg counties on HWY 104.

Police responded to multiple collisions on HWY 102 in Colchester County between exit 12 and 14, causing traffic to slow to a creep with only one lane open to traffic.

News 95.7’s Meteorologist Richard Zurawski said highway speeds combined with black ice makes for a bad combination on the roads.

“The ground is pretty much frozen right now because the temperatures have been quite cold over the last little while so it’s certainly a slippery situation,” said Zurawski, “So you wind up with ice down on the road then snow over top which make it worse.”

The provinces Department of Transportation is reminding drivers heading out in wintery conditions to call 511 for the latest road closures and driving conditions across the province.
