Dexter in Ottawa for talks with feds

Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter has met with Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Ottawa where he will also hold two days of talks with federal officials.

Dexter says he briefed Harper on the premier’s conference on the economy which was held last week in Halifax.

In particular, Dexter says he highlighted the importance of renegotiating funding agreements in skills and development training before they expire in 2014.

On other fronts, Dexter says they discussed the proposed Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project and the status of contracts for the federal government’s naval shipbuilding program, which was awarded to the Irving shipyard in Halifax.

Dexter says while he’s optimistic, he can’t say whether word on a federal loan guarantee for Muskrat Falls is imminent.

Dexter says he also stressed the importance of sticking to timelines with the federal shipbuilding contracts so there are no gaps in the amount of work available in the new year.
