Feds won’t intervene in deportation case

The federal government says it won’t intervene in the case of an American woman deported back to the U.S.

A spokeswoman with Public Safety says there is nothing it can do for 73-year-old Nancy Inferrera.

The woman was deported yesterday after she tried numerous times to remain in Canada.

Inferrera says she came to Nova Scotia in 2008 to live with and care for her 83-year-old friend, Mildred Sanford.

The pair headed to the border from their home in Guysborough County after Inferrera’s applications to stay in the country were rejected.

Megan Leslie, the N-D-P member of Parliament for Halifax, said the government should help the elderly women remain in Canada.

Inferrera’s lawyer says he would consider a special application for a temporary residence permit, but that that could take almost a year.
