Mayor turns down 4% pay increase

Mayor Peter Kelly says his salary will stay the same and he will not accept a recommended 4% pay increase.

The raise was supposed to kick in this week and it would have brought Kelly’s salary to $144,962 a year.  Councillors are getting a 1.6% boost to their pay, bringing them to $72,357 a year.  The deputy mayor’s salary is now $79,592 a year.

In a release, Kelly says he’d spoken to a number of people who were upset at the increases.  He says times are tough and he cannot in good conscience accept the increase.

He says he plans to revisit the current formula for calculating council’s pay.
