HHB adds extra MACPASS-only lane to MacKay Bridge

HALIFAX – The Halifax Harbour Bridge Commission has added another MACPASS-only lane on the MacKay Bridge, in an effort to help commuters save time and money.

Allison MacDonald with HHB public relations tells NEWS 95.7 the commission hopes to increase efficiency through the tolls during high traffic times on the bridge.

“During the peak hours, only 15 per cent of our customers use cash. During the off-peak, only 25 per cent of crossings are made using cash,” says MacDonald. “We thought now would be a good time to make another lane MACPASS-only and we believe it will improve toll plaza congestion.”

Some commuters took to social media this morning to complain about the added MACPASS-only lane following some morning congestion, but MacDonald says the overall goal is to improve traffic flow.

“We understand not all customers use MACPASS so we will continue to monitor the impact of the change,” MacDonald says, “but we believe this change will improve traffic flow given the high percentage of people who do use MACPASS.”

She says the MACPASS is the more efficient method to cross the bridge at 80 cents versus a dollar if paying with cash. She adds there is no additional cost to purchase the MACPASS transponder.
