Halifax festivals, bars all ready for World Cup boom

HALIFAX – For soccer fans, the wait is over; one of the biggest and most expensive sports events in history kicks off today.

Even if you’re not a fan of the popular sport, chances are you’re still going to get swept up in the excitement over the next few weeks, as festivals, bars and restaurants all over the city get in the spirit of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Halifax Greek Fest organizer, Bessy, said they’re really excited to kick off the festival the same day the games get underway.

“We’ve got screens set up throughout the premises where we’ll be airing most of the games,” she said. “Of course, Greece and Columbia tomorrow is the big one, so we’re pretty excited about that.”

General manager of the Old Triangle, Joel, says they brought in a big screen just in time for the crowds to show up.

“They’ll start flooding in today, and I’m pretty sure it’ll be non-stop until the games are over,” he said.

Host country, Brazil, goes up against Croatia today at 5 p.m.
