Lulay named CFL’s Most Outstanding Player

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – BC Lions quarterback Travis Lulay took home the top prize at the CFL Player Awards as he beat out Montreal Alouettes pivot Anthony Calvillo for the league’s Most Outstanding Player award.

Lulay threw for 4,815 yards and 32 touchdowns while he was intercepted just 11 times. The product of Montana State also got things done with his legs. He ran for 391 yards and three touchdowns. Lulay received 44 of 62 first place votes to beat Calvillo, who previously won the award in 2003, 2008, 2009.

The Lions had one other winner as Paul McCallum was named the top special teams player, edging Chad Owens of the Toronto Argonauts.

McCallum captured the Most Outstanding Special Team Player award after a career year.  He set a new CFL record with a 94.3 per cent success rate on field goals and also kicked a record 30-straight without a miss. The 41-year-old placekicker and punter received 42 of 62 first place votes to beat Owens. McCallum also led the league in scoring with 203 points.

BC did have one unsuccessful nominee.  Jovan Olafioye was beaten by Josh Bourke of the Montreal Alouettes for the Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman honour.

Other winners included former Lion and current Edmonton Eskimos running back Jerome Messam as top Canadian, Jovon Johnson of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers as outstanding defensive player and Hamilton Tiger-Cats receiver Chris Williams as the league’s top rookie.

The awards were a prelude to the Grey Cup game which will see the Lions take on the Blue Bombers at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday at BC Place.
