News1130 Sports weekend round-up

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There’s plenty of action for the local sports fan this weekend.

NHL

The Canucks are right back on the ice tonight for a road game against the St Louis Blues, trying to rebound from last night’s 5-1 loss in Minnesota. The drubbing denied the Canucks their first three-game winning streak of the season but they have yet to win or lose more than two games in a row this season.

Tonight’s game is a rematch at Rogers Arena on October 26th when Brian Elliott out-dueled Cory Schneider in a 3-0 St. Louis victory. Tonight, the Canucks will go back to Roberto Luongo in goal. Luongo is 4-3-1 but has bounced back to won his last two starts.

The Blues have been off since Sunday, when they finished a four-game road trip with a 4-2 loss in Edmonton. Defenceman Sami Salo is questionable for tonight’s game after missing the Minnesota game with a groin injury.

The Blues will have retired St Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa in the arena to drop the ceremonial first puck. Cardinals’ World Series hero Chris Carpenter skated with the Blues this week at practice.

Faceoff is 5 p.m. The game can be seen on Rogers Sportsnet Pacific.

WHL

The Vancouver Giants play back to back games in Victoria against the Royals tonight and tomorrow. The Royals have been off since splitting a pair of games versus the Seattle Thunderbirds last weekend in Victoria, and are an impressive 5-1-0-1 on home ice this season.

The Giants doubled up the Thunderbirds 4-2 in Kent, WA, on Tuesday night for their fifth victory in their last six games. The Giants have won three of four meetings versus Victoria this season, outscoring the Royals 21-9.

Game time tonight is 7:05 p.m.

AHL

The Abbotsford Heat will continue their American Hockey League home series with the Oklahoma City Barons tomorrow night. The Heat lost 3-1 to the Edmonton Oilers’ farm team last night with North Vancouver native Gilbert Brule scoring his third of the season for Oklahoma City.

Last night’s victory pushed Oklahoma City past Abbotsford into second-place in the tight AHL West Division.

Puck drop tomorrow is 7 p.m.

CFL

The BC Lions will close out the CFL regular season tomorrow night at BC Place against Montreal in what could be a battle for first place for both teams.

The Lions (10-7) enter the final weekend tied for first place in the West Division with Edmonton and Calgary. If both the Eskimos and Stampeders lose their games this weekend, BC will not have to win to secure first and a West Final playoff game at home.

The Lions own a tiebreaker with both Edmonton and Calgary. Montreal is also scrambling with Winnipeg to settle first place in the East Division. The Blue Bombers play Calgary earlier in the day tomorrow.

Kickoff tomorrow is 7 p.m.

UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL

The No. 6-ranked UBC Thunderbirds host No. 10 University of Saskatchewan in Canada West playoff action tomorrow (2 p.m.) at Thunderbird Stadium. The opening round playoff game is UBC’s first postseason game on home field since 1999.

The Simon Fraser University Clansmen are back home after losing 42-10 to Humboldt State in Northern California last week.  The Clan have lost three in a row as they prepare to host Central Washington (2 p.m.) Saturday at Terry Fox Field.
