News1130 Sports weekend round-up

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There’s plenty of action for the local sports fan this weekend.

NHL

The Vancouver Canucks welcome one of the hottest teams in the NHL to town tomorrow night when the Washington Capitals visit Rogers Arena. Washington lost its first game of the season, 2-1 in Edmonton last night but are 7-1-0-0, good for second in the Eastern Conference behind the Pittsburgh Penguins.

It means a visit by Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin who was kept off the scoresheet in Edmonton but the Russian superstar and his Capitals have had a more balanced attack this season.

The Canucks are expected to go back to Roberto Luongo in goal tomorrow. Luongo has played well against Ovechkin. The Canucks have won seven of their last eight meetings with the Capitals, including a 4-2 win in Washington last January, their only meeting of the season.

The Canucks have to regain their scoring touch. Vancouver has been blanked three times in their first ten games. Game time Saturday is 7 p.m.

AHL

The Abbotsford Heat try to get back to their winning ways this weekend in Grand Rapids, Michigan as the team enters the weekend with a two-game American Hockey League losing skid against game against the Griffins, the AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings.
