Lions lose fourth straight game to open season

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The BC Lions dug themselves an early hole and couldn’t quite crawl out of it as they were beaten 39-31 by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to fall to 0-4 to start the season.

The Leos got off to a slow start as they punted on their first two possessions while on the other side of the ball, the Tabbies first two touches ended up in the endzone. First, Avon Cobourne rushed in from two yards out and then Kevin Glenn hooked up with Dave Stala from the four-yard line.

BC clawed their way back into the game though. After pulling to within a touchdown when Jamal Robertson found his way in for a score, Korey Banks picked off a deflected Kevin Glenn pass and ran back 37 yards to tie the game at 21.

The two sides would each score a touchdown and a field goal as they were tied at 31 late. The Tiger-Cats worked their way down the field and Justin Medlock missed a 28-yard field goal, though he did get the extra point to put his club up by one. BC got the ball back with about a minute to play but they couldn’t get anywhere and turned the ball over on downs.

Avon Cobourne then put the game out of reach, scampering into the endzone from 46 yards out, and Hamilton held on for the 39-31 victory.

Lions quarterback Travis Lulay completed 22 of 38 passes for 251 yards and one touchdown. He was also picked off once. The Leos are back in action on July 28 when they visit Winnipeg for a game with the Blue Bombers.
