Danton to make his SMU debut

Former NHL player Mike Danton is expected to hit the ice tonight for the first time with the Saint Mary’s Huskies.

Danton was convicted of a murder for hire plot in 2004 and paroled in September. He’s now enrolled in courses at SMU and joined the hockey team after all the players signed a letter of approval.

Danton has only practiced with the team four times but head coach Trevor Stienburg tells CBC he’s “chomping at the bit.”

Stienburg says Danton’s not in game shape yet and it will likely take at least five games for him to feel okay.

The Huskies play Acadia tonight.
