Former NHL player poised to join SMU Huskies

Saint Mary’s University says it will accept a former NHL player who was convicted of orchestrating a murder for hire.

Mike Danton, 29, was released from prison in September and has been cleared by SMU administrators to enrol in sociology courses and join the Huskies hockey team.

Athletic director Steve Sarty tells CTV the decision to accept a convicted felon wasn’t easy.

“I thought long and hard about it,” he said. “I’ve had a few sleepless nights thinking about it. I’ve done a lot of research on the situation and I think people deserve a second chance.”

Danton was sentenced to seven and a half years for the failed plot to kill his former agent.

He’s waiting for the parole board to approve his move from Ontario to Halifax, which could happen as soon as today.
