Military widow stages one-woman protest against Veteran Affairs Canada

HALIFAX – A military widow is taking her fight with Veterans Affairs Canada to the department’s offices in Halifax by staging a one-woman protest.

She’s been looking for compensation for years and said her husband’s sickness and eventual death is linked to toxic chemicals used in the military.

Dawn Collins said her husband, Wayne, served in the Canadian Navy for five years and would become ill while on duty on the ship. She adds once he left that environment, he felt better until his health took a serious downturn.

She told the Rick Howe Show her husband is not the only one suffering from what is being proposed as a rare disease.

“Veterans are treated very poorly and our country should be ashamed of themselves,” she said. “They go overseas and they fight to protect us and when they come back, the government turns their back on them.”

Collins said there is evidence linking those hazardous chemicals to illness and cancer, as she has been looking for compensation since her husband’s death in 2012.

She said she will continue to protest until her files are reviewed.
