Atlantic provinces unveil new ‘secure’ driver’s licences, photo ID

HALIFAX – All four provinces in Atlantic Canada announced on Tuesday that they’ll soon be introducing new “highly secure” driver’s licences and photo ID cards.

Starting in November, residents will be able to receive their new cards, which P.E.I. says will mean cost savings for all provinces, and consistency when travelling across the region.

The new driver’s licences will be printed at a central facility shared by all four provinces and mailed out within 14 days.

The new cards will be made out of tamper-resistant polycarbonate, while the photo and personal data on the card are laser-engraved to protect against forgery.

However, you’ll no longer be able to wear eyeglasses in your photo.

Nova Scotia Transportation Minister Lloyd Hines said the change is mostly aimed at protecting residents from identity theft and fraud.
