‘Safety and security top of mind during large events’: Halifax police say following Las Vegas shooting

HALIFAX – In the wake of the horrific attack in Las Vegas earlier this week, Halifax Regional Police say public safety and security is always top of mind when large gatherings take place in the city.

Staff Sgt. Scott MacDonald’s comments come days after the deadly mass shooting that left 59 dead, and more than 500 injured.

As it stands, HRP works closely with large event organizers in the city, as part of the special events task force.

In light of the tragic event in Las Vegas earlier this week, MacDonald told NEWS 95.7 it’s always important to learn from tragedies in order to prevent them.

“We have members who follow events and share intelligence, not only at a local level, but also provincially, nationally and internationally, as well,” he said. “As far as reevaluating or changing plans, we’d be looking for some kind of a local component to vary significantly from plans that are already underway.”

MacDonald said it’s always preferable to prevent an emergency from happening, than to respond and investigate it after the fact.

If anybody sees something suspicious at a local event, they are encouraged to contact police and inform them of their concerns.
