NewsAlert: N.S. premier issues apology for systemic racism in justice system

By The Canadian Press

HALIFAX — Premier Stephen McNeil is apologizing to Black and Indigenous Nova Scotians for systemic racism in the province’s justice system.

McNeil said today that policing and public safety institutions have not been just for many Nova Scotians, and he apologized for the harm, trauma and pain caused over generations.

The province is creating a team with members from the community, government and from police forces to identify the “fundamental changes” needed to address the issue.

The team is to carry out its work over the next 12-18 months.

More coming.
