Sears Canada’s attempts to liquidate remaining stores is surprising, local expert says

HALIFAX – A local marketing expert says he expected Sears Canada would allow more time to try and save the business, as the retail franchise announced Tuesday its plans to seek court approval to liquidate all its remaining stores.

The announcement comes after Sears Canada failed the find a buyer that would allow it to continue operating.

Ed McHugh, who teaches business and marketing at the Nova Scotia Community College, said Sears going out of business was inevitable but he did think its comeback efforts would have been granted more time.

“I thought they would give it a little bit more effort and time, but obviously the forecasting models they’ve done just don’t match up,” McHugh said.

He said Sears today is about half the company it was ten years ago in terms of revenue.

Pending the court’s approval, the company wants to start the liquidation sales no later than October 19 and continue for about 10 to 14 weeks.
