Quebec cop arrested for allegedly leaking sensitive information

SHERBROOKE, Que. – A Quebec police officer has been charged with leaking sensitive information from the province’s criminal data banks.
Alex Therrien, who has 10 years experience with the Sherbrooke municipal force, is alleged to have fraudulently used information from Sherbrooke police computers as well as the Quebec Police Information Centre.
Therrien is also charged with breach of trust and providing information to an unauthorized third party.
Therrien was arrested Thursday morning after an internal investigation by Sherbrooke police.
The leaks are alleged to have taken place between November 2008 and December 2012.
Sherbrooke police Chief Gaetan Labbe said Therrien has been suspended with pay.
Therrien’s arrest shocked his fellow officers, said Robin Cote, head of the Sherbrooke police union.
“Nobody expected this,” he said. “Nobody wants that. It knocked people off their feet to hear this.”
Therrien was released under certain conditions after his arraignment.
He must remain in Sherbrooke and cannot communicate with his colleagues or visit the local police headquarters.
He will return to court on June 11.
