Busy start to the London Games

Canada already has a shot at a medal on Day 1 of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Ryan Cochrane won his heat this morning for the 400 metre freestyle swim.

The 23-year-old from Victoria won the second of four heats – and posted the eighth-fastest time in qualifying with a time of 3:47.26.

He advances to this evening’s final giving him a chance at a medal.

Chochrane says he is confident he can swim even faster tonight.

Also in Aquatics, Scott Dickens broke the Canadian record in the 100 metre breaststroke with a time of 59.85 seconds.

It has been a packed schedule for the official first day of the games. Canada has also competed in Basketball, they suffered a 58-53 loss to Russia.

In rowing, Canada’s men’s eight will have to go through the repechage round on Monday in order to advance to the final on Wednesday. The defending Olympic champions finished fourth and last in their heat.

Later today Canada will compete in a preliminary round of Men’s Beach Volleyball against Great Britain.
