Health Canada warns of sprout-born illnesses

Health Canada is warning that children under five, seniors and pregnant women should refrain from eating raw or cooked bean or alfalfa sprouts.

The sprouts could contain harmful bacteria such as salmonella.

The agency says healthy adults who choose to eat sprouts should make sure they are kept refrigerated and are crisp. Sprouts that are dark in colour or have a musty smell should not be consumed.

Approximately 1,000 sprout-borne illnesses were recorded in Canada between 1995 and 2011.
