Riots, looting follow Habs’ surprise Game 7 win over Pittsburgh

The Cinder-fellas have done it again!

The Montreal Canadiens defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins Wednesday night to eliminate them from the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Brian Gionta scored twice on the power play and Jaroslav Halak made 37 saves as the Habs sent the defending Stanley Cup champs packing with a 5-2 win.

Montreal also stunned the Washington Capitals in Game 7 of the opening-round series after trailing 3-1.

The post-game celebration in the streets of Montreal turned a little ugly overnight as as police clashed with youths who got a little out of hand.

Hours after thousands of happy Habs fans poured into Ste. Catherine street to cheer the Canadiens’ victory, some teens started smashing store windows and throwing beer bottles at police.

Peter Ray of the Canadian Press was there when the celebrations turned to riots.

“By then, most of the people had gone home and the group that started causing trouble…police lobbed some tear gas, they lobbed some beer bottles back and they just thought enough was enough,” he said. “They just moved in and swept through the street and within half an hour, all of Ste. Catherine street was empty.”

In the end, 25 people were arrested, three stores had been looted and two officers suffered minor injuries.

The Canadiens will get a bit of a rest while they wait for their opponent in the Eastern Conference final.

The Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers play Game 7 of their series tomorrow night with the winner taking on Montreal.
