Police investigate Nova Scotia link after military official arrested for murders

There may be a connection between the death of a Nova Scotia woman and the embattled base commander of CFB Trenton.

Kathleen MacVicar, 19, of Glace Bay was brutally raped and murdered in June 2001 while visiting relatives in Trenton.

Her death’s among the cases now being re-examined by Ontario Provincial Police since Col. Russell Williams was arrested Sunday on the two murder charges.

Williams was based at CFB Shearwater in the early 1990s and there were three unsolved murders during that time.

“In light of this arrest and the attention that has come to our department about them, they’ve been looked at, they’re open investigations and they’re going continue to be investigated,” says Cst. Brian Palmeter with Halifax Regional Police.

“No information or no new evidence has been brought forth in relation to those files.”

Retired Col. John Cody was base commander at CFB Shearwater while Williams was here. He says the young jet pilot didn’t really stand out in his mind.

“I actually have no recollection of him, I regret to say,” says Cody.

Williams was based at CFB Shearwater from 1992 to 1994 when his squadron moved to Greenwood. Its not known if Williams also moved to the valley.
