Canadians with property in Florida urged to check in with insurance companies

HALIFAX – Pete Karageorgos with the Insurance Bureau of Canada is encouraging Canadians with property in Florida to contact their insurance companies as soon as possible.

Karageorgos says whenever someone faces any type of disaster, including floods or hurricanes, the bureau suggests people immediately contact their insurance companies to get the claims process started.

He says generally in Canada insurance covers wind damage, but he tells NEWS 95.7 people need to carefully review the fine-print of policies – especially in areas like Florida that have undergone regular severe storms.

“Sometimes companies may change wordings of policies, may add coverages or ask for people to purchase additional endorsements for specific risks,” he said. “Things like flood insurance as a result of the hurricane, and maybe even specific hurricane coverage may be required.”

Karageorgos says natural disasters can be expensive events to recover from and people need to be prepared with proper insurance.

He warns to never assume anything is covered, and that questioning your insurance companies about what is and isn’t covered is highly recommended.
