The Argyle set to close as construction claims another victim

HALIFAX – After 26 years in business, The Argyle Bar & Grill will be closing its doors for the last time in September.

The bar’s general manager, Colin Madigan, is blaming the Argyle streetscape project and Nova Centre construction for its demise.

Speaking with the Chronicle Herald, Madigan called the area “a war zone”, saying the constant construction has made for a terrible experience on the bar’s rooftop patio.

The GM said sales have been cut by as much as 56 per cent, and about a dozen employees have either been let go or quit.

The bar’s main floor is under renovation and closed.

The Argyle is not the first business to suffer from construction. Many business owners on the street have said sales are down, including Phillip Holmans of the World Tea House. Earlier this summer, Holmans took to Twitter to plead for help after his sales were cut in half.

Madigan also calling out the municipality, saying staff and councillors have not taken his concerns seriously.

The Argyle will close next month, but will reopen in October as The Pint, a new sports bar.
