Dartmouth councillor says driver who hit geese ‘very distraught’, countering online rumours

The councillor for Dartmouth Centre is hoping to clear up misinformation floating around social media following the deaths of two geese near Sullivan’s Pond.

Anger exploded as online rumours suggested the driver sped up to hit the geese before fleeing the scene, Sam Austin told NEWS 95.7 that wasn’t the case.

“I appreciate where people’s outrage is coming from, but the police from what I’ve gathered have conducted a thorough investigation,” he explained. “The driver, despite some of the telling on social media, he didn’t leave the scene, he actually called the officers back later on in the evening, this was after being interviewed at the scene.”

Austin said the driver was so distraught after the accident, he became physically ill.

He said this appears to have been nothing more than a horrible accident, but jumping to conclusions is the nature of our connected world.

“It can sometimes be a while before all the details of the story come out,” he said. “This is tragic, I live in the neighbourhood and for the life of me, I can’t fathom how you wouldn’t see the geese, but I know to look for them there.”

Police say they interviewed several witnesses who confirmed speed was not a factor.

A third goose survived the incident and is being closely monitored by volunteers.
