Local doctor signs off of MyHealthNS amid compensation concerns

HALIFAX – A local doctor, one of the first to use the still relatively new MyHealthNS online portal, has told her patients she’ll no longer be using it.

Dr. Ajantha Jayabarathan telling Global News she’s reached her “breaking point”. The tool allowed her to provide more distance care for patients, but she hasn’t been getting paid.

“My clinic was able to actually show that we increased my ability to care for people by 22 per cent, but I lost 18 per cent of my income,” Dr. AJ told Global.

The portal was introduced last summer, but a compensation model still hasn’t been hashed out.

The provincial health minister telling Global News a model is being worked on with the organization representing physicians, Doctors Nova Scotia.

But the group echoes Jayabarathan’s sentiments, wanting to see something in place.

“I wish it were within Doctors Nova Scotia’s authority to put that fee structure in place, because I can assure you we would have had it long ago,” said Alana Patterson.
