HALIFAX – Automated bus stop announcements are coming to Halifax Transit which the Municipality means will make the service more user-friendly and accessible to riders.

Starting Monday, Halifax Transit said a ‘soothing female voice’ will deliver audio announcements of bus stops on interior and exterior speakers for 13 routes, while visual announcements will also be made on on-board display screens.

The initial rollout is a pilot phase on routes 2, 7, 20, 21, 35, 54, 59, 60, 72, 80, 87, 89 and 400.

HRM spokesperson Tiffany Chase said the limited roll out will allow HRM to monitor and make any adjustments before a full roll out to all routes in the New Year.

She said the move will also make transit much more accessible in the Municipality.

“Right now if you’re a visually or hearing impaired transit user, you typically have had to rely on the bus operator or other passengers to let you know which bus to board or where exactly you are in your route,” she said.

She said for all users to see if the night as well if you’re approaching a stop to depart on or if there are a number of busses pulling up at one time, the external speakers make it clear where the bus is headed and what number it is.
