Halifax logo debate coming to council

Councillors will debate whether the name Halifax should be removed from signage in communities like Dartmouth and Eastern Passage.

A group of councillors is pushing the a motion, including new  Harbourview-Burnside-Dartmouth East councillor Tony Mancini.

A motion came from the Harbour East-Marine Drive community council meeting earlier this month, where five of its councillors, including Mancini, voted in favour of the motion by Councillor Gloria McCluskey to bring the debate over signage back to regional council.

McCluskey told Gobal News that a promise was made years ago.

“It’s taking away our identity, we were promised during amalgamation that we would not lose our identity,” she explained.

Councillors Bill Karsten, David Hendsbee and Lorelei Nicoll also voted in favour of bringing the motion to regional council this week, with a hope of finding out what the cost would be to remove the Halifax name and logo from signs in Dartmouth.
