Halifax-area gets 35 centimetres of snow, delays and cancellations for Tuesday

HALIFAX – The cleanup continues in Halifax on Tuesday after nearly 40 centimetres of snow has fallen in the region since Monday afternoon, coupled with gusty winds and blowing snow.

Winter Operations Crews for HRM have been out and about since Tuesday afternoon, according to HRM spokesperson Jennifer Stairs, who said crews will continue to work throughout the day.

“We did get all of the main arterial routes plowed….we’re continuing with the residential side streets too, we’ve already done the first and second cut-throughs, but we’ll be out pushing the snow back throughout the day,” Stairs said.

The Municipality’s on-street parking ban will be enforced again overnight Wednesday, according to Stairs, but she reminds drivers that under the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act, they can still be ticketed or towed any time a car is blocking snow clearing operations.

She said it’s best just to not park on the street on Tuesday to help aid in the snow removal.

Schools 

Halifax Regional School Board has cancelled all classes for Tuesday. Board offices will have a delayed opening with a decision on the status of offices delayed until 10:30.

Chignecto Central Regional School Board has closed schools for Tuesday but said all worksites and offices will be delayed in opening by three hours.

Annapolis Valley Regional School Board has closed schools for Tuesday.

Strait Regional School Board has closed all schools for Tuesday.

Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board have cancelled classes for Tuesday.

South Shore Regional School Board has closed schools for Tuesday.

Conseil scolaire acadien provincial, the province’s french language school board, has closed schools in the Clare and Argyle and Halifax areas.

Dalhousie University’s Halifax campus will remain closed today. Truro campus to open as scheduled.

University of King’s College is delayed opening until Noon Tuesday.

Saint Mary’s University has planned to open at 11 a.m. on Tuesday but students are asked to check for updates.

Mount Saint Vincent University will delay opening their doors until 11 a.m. on Tuesday.

NSCAD University will delay their opening until Noon on Tuesday.

Acadia University has delayed opening of their campus until 10 a.m.

St. Francis Xavier University have delayed opening until Noon on Tuesday. Evening classes will be reassessed later today.

Cape Breton University has delayed has for Tuesday with the status of evening classes to be updated by 4 p.m.

NSCC’s Cumberland, Marconi, Pictou, Strait Area, Truro, Waterfront, Institute of Technology, Kingstec, Akerley, Annapolis Valley campuses are all closed. Cumberland campus will assess evening classes later.

NSCC’s Shelburne, Lunenburg and Burridge campuses will delay opening until 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

Halifax Christian Academy’s Rock and Armdale campus are both closed on Tuesday.

Halifax Christian Academy’s Early Education Centre in Timberlea is closed for Tuesday.

Sandy Lake Academy, Sacred Heart School of Halifax, Halifax Grammar School, Shambhala School and Bean Sprouts Learning Center are all closed.

Atlantic School of Theology will delay opening until 11 a.m. with a decision to be made on closure then.

Transportation

The overnight parking ban will be enforced from 12 a.m. – 6 a.m. on Wednesday but HRM said cars can be ticketed or towed at anytime for blocking snow clearing operations.

Government/Services

Halifax Public Libraries now hoping to be open by 3 p.m.

Municipal offices, customer service centres and many recreation facilities will be closed until at least Noon, with staff set to reassess the situation at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Dartmouth Sportsplex will be delayed in opening until noon on Tuesday and has cancelled all morning programs.

Garbage collection for Tuesday has been cancelled, with no rescheduled date because of a holiday pickup on Saturday. Twice the limit will be allowed on the next scheduled pickup.

Provincial Government offices will remain closed until 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s government announcement at the Fairview Family Resource Centre in Halifax is postponed.

Standing Committee on Economic Development has been cancelled.

The opening of CFB Halifax  HMC Dockyard and 12-Wing Shearwater will be delayed until noon.

Department of Fisheries and Oceans will delay opening of their offices until 10 a.m.

Nova Scotia Courts said operations at courthouses may be affected by the weather, and to call ahead if you’re supposed to be in court.

Access NS Centres will delay opening until 10 a.m., except in Cape Breton, where they will open at noon.

UARB offices are delayed opening until 10 a.m.

Immigration Services Association of Nova Scotia offices will delay opening until noon.

Workers’ Compensation Board of Nova Scotia’s office in Halifax will delay opening until 10 a.m.

The U.S. Consulate in Halifax will delay opening until 11 a.m.

Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society will delay opening its offices until noon.

Community Y, YMCA Immigrant & Employment Centres are closed Tuesday until further notice.

Annapolis Valley Municipal Offices will delay opening until noon.

Town of Wolfville’s Office will be delayed opening until 10 a.m.

Cape Breton Regional Municipality’s offices will be closed on Tuesday with garbage collection cancelled as well.

Municipal Offices in East Hants will delay opening until noon.

Medical

Family Focus and Medicine in Motion clinics will delay opening until noon on Tuesday.

Nova Scotia Health Authority said facilities in Cape Breton are only offering emergency services only.

Retail/Museums

Halifax Shopping Centre and Mic Mac Mall will be open regular hours on Tuesday but individual stores may be delayed.

Dartmouth Crossing expects to open at 11 a.m. on Tuesday but individual stores may be delayed further.

Sunnyside Mall will be open regular hours.

Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market will remain closed on Tuesday.

The Discovery Centre will be delay opening until noon.

Museum of Natural History will delay opening until 11 a.m.

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic will delay opening until 11 am.

The Downtown Halifax Business Commission office is closed Tuesday morning.

East Coast Credit Union has delayed branch openings until 10 a.m. in the HRM, while decision on a noon opening for branches in Cape Breton, Sheet Harbour and Upper Stewiacke will be made at 11 a.m.
Canada Games Centre will delay opening the Centre until 10 a.m.

Events

Vance Joy concert originally scheduled for Monday at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium is now tonight at 7 p.m., those unable to go can get a refund at the point of purchase until 5 p.m.

Halifax Partnership’s Pitch It event is postponed until March 1.
