Roundabout construction closures underway

Construction of another roundabout near the Halifax Common has started, and that means street closures in the area.

North Park Street between Cornwallis Street and Cogswell Street will be closed till early June, along with Cogswell Street between North Park Street and Bauer street.

The block of Cogswell Street between Bauer and Gottingen streets will only be open to local traffic.

City spokesperson Jennifer Stairs said the city is making a shift towards roundabouts to fix out-dated intersections.

“They help to keep traffic flowing, they reduce emission because you have less idling,” said Stairs.  “It’s safer for pedestrians because you have shorter crossing distances because you only have to look one way for traffic.”

This will be the second roundabout in the area, the one at North Park, Cunard and Agricola opened to traffic in November.

The current street closures will be in place till June, and then the city will close others to complete construction.

The roundabout is expected to be finished in late fall.

More information on the construction, as well as how to safely navigate a roundabout, can be found on the city’s website.
