Stormy weather expected for the first weekend of spring

Just as the city slowly comes back to life, another storm is in the forecast Saturday. Meteorologist Richard Zurawski said it’s a complicated scenario that will bring 10-20 millimetres of rain, followed by colder than normal temperatures resulting in flash freezing.

The rain is expected to start between 2 and 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon.

As the two systems converge, the storm will slowly move out Sunday afternoon.

Zurawski said, “In the course of that, temperatures are expected to peak at about 4 or 5 degrees which means most of the precipitation will come down in Halifax in the form of rain.”

Parts of Nova Scotia could get some snow, especially Northern Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island. Most of Nova Scotia including South Shore, Eastern Shore and Halifax will be looking at mostly rain although it could start out as snow.

City crews could be faced with more problems once the significant melt begins Saturday through Sunday. Zurawski said the temperature will hover around the freezing mark at first but then plummet.

“Then we’re looking at a freeze. It looks like things will get colder again and stay cold at least for a few days. So everything we’re getting on Saturday and Sunday will freeze,” he said.

Halifax Regional Police wish to advise the residents of HRM that the parking ban is still in effect. Vehicles are not allowed to park on any street in the city until further notice. Cars found in violation could get a $50 parking ticket and towed at the owner’s expense.
