Moncton RCMP shooting: release of evidence up for debate

A court hearing will be held in Moncton today after the Crown and a lawyer for Justin Bourque opposed the public release of exhibits used in the cop-killer’s sentencing hearing.

A number of media companies, including The Canadian Press, have requested access to be able to publish and broadcast the exhibits.

Media lawyer David Coles says the exhibits should not be sealed.

“It seems to me the Canadian public has a right to review the evidence,” said Coles, adding that the exhibits, including Bourque’s statement to the police, are important in helping the public understand what happened.

“Surely we’ve got to try to understand what was going on in this young man’s head. Now I’m not saying the exhibits are going to answer all those questions, but they’re sure part of the debate.”

The exhibits include recordings of 9-1-1 calls, police radio transmissions from the five officers, and an interview Bourque gave to police after his arrest.
