NSGEU stage protests against health care legislation

The Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union were to hold two protests about the controversial health care merger legislation Wednesday: one at Liberal MLA Joachim Stroink’s office in Halifax, and one at MLA Ben Jessome’s in Hammonds Plains.

At Stroink’s office, NSGEU protesters danced to music, and waved their flags as passing cars honked in support on Quinpool Rd.

NSGEU member Kelly Murphy says the point is to keep Bill 1 — the controversial health care merger bill — top of mind for Nova Scotians.

“This is a major issue,” she said. “Our country and our province is built on democracy, and they’ve taken that away.”

The bill, which passed at the beginning of this month merges the number of bargaining units in the health-care system from 50 to four.

Retired NSGEU member Winston West says the bill is an affront to workers’ rights.

“This is absolutely ridiculous that a duly elected government should take away the rights of 24 thousand health care workers,” he said.
