Nova Scotia Power says outsourcing plans could affect 13 jobs at Trenton plant

HALIFAX – Nova Scotia Power says up to 13 unionized jobs at its plant in Trenton could be impacted as the company moves toward outsourcing more work.
The privately owned utility says contracting out coal- and ash-handling work at the thermal generating station would save customers money.
It says no layoff notices have been issued and discussions will take place in the coming weeks with the union representing the workers.
Nova Scotia Power, a subsidiary of Emera, issued a request for proposals last fall for vendors interested in providing services currently done by the company’s employees in a bid to save money.
It says the same type of work being done in Trenton has been contracted out for nearly 10 years at the Point Tupper generating station.
The utility says it is also reviewing the situation at its thermal plants in Point Aconi and Lingan.
