White Juan 10-year anniversary

It was called the perfect blizzard, a weather bomb 10-years ago that buried Halifax in 90-centimetres of snow in a short period of time.

An intense low pressure system formed south of Nova Scotia and brought heavy snow, high winds and limited visibility to the Maritimes.

Peter Kelly was the mayor in 2004 , he told News 95.7 the city was as ready as it could be, not knowing how bad it would be.

“This was probably the largest amount of snow a city of our size has ever received anywhere across the world from what I understand,” said Kelly.

No transportation, no power, and even a roof blown off a wing of the Victoria General Hospital.

Kelly said he remembers what the people did to survive the adversity.

“The staff worked extremely hard.  They put long, hard days in.  Nova Scotia Power were out there working hard as well,” explained Kelly.

In 12-days, the Red Cross helped 30-thousand people and initiated an adopt-a-neighbour program to encourage people who had power to reach out to people who did not.

White Juan cost the city millions of dollars.

MP Peter MacKay announced just this month, ten years later, $3.6 million dollars of disaster funding will finally be paid out.
