Police put on furry costumes to combat crosswalk collisions

Police promised last week that they’d begin taking the pedestrian crosswalk safety issue more seriously than ever, with a brand new public awareness strategy to come.

Halifax Regional Police say says officers are dressing up in huge mascot costumes and parading back and forth at intersections, threatening to ticket drivers who don’t stop.

“They are highly visible, so we highly doubt someone will say ‘Well, I did not see him, officer,'” said HRP Constable Pierre Bourdages.

So, if you see Blue the crime-fighting dog or the RCMP Safety Bear, be sure to yield for them.

“Earlier in the year, police focused heavily on education,” said Inspector Jeff Dowling of Halifax District RCMP. “With the number of pedestrians struck already at 23 for December, there have been cries for police to try something new. This type of approach has worked in other areas and we thought it could also work here in HRM.”
