Gambling centre angers neighbours

It appears as if the hands of Halifax Regional Municipality are tied when it comes to a Gambling Centre that is soon to be built in Hammonds Plains.

The centre will be built in Wallace Hills, near the intersection of Hammonds Plains Road and Pockwock Road and will be home to 45 Video Lottery Terminals to start, with additional 55 machines coming in phase two.

The centre will be built on a 55 hectare piece of land owned by the Shubenacadie First Nation and has already received all of the necessary approvals to move ahead, despite opposition from HRM.

District 13 councillor Matt Whitman says there was a rumor that the facility was going to be built for about a year, but the final plans caught him off guard.

“The folks that are doing the development don’t fell like that have to consult because they have the go-ahead to proceed,”  said Whitman.

Sixty-five concerned residents attended a meeting Thursday night on the project and heard from members of the Band that the Gambling Centre is needed to help fight poverty and a housing shortage at the Indian Brook First Nation reserve.
