Students steamed over Dal parking crunch

Dalhousie University has 18,000 students, 2000 employees and 2100 parking spots, making parking on campus a bit of a tricky task.

Recently, the university started constructing a new building in a parking lot down the street from the the Dentistry Building on campus. Some students are upset because the building takes parking away from the already limted spots they had.

“It’s a little bit frustrating, since it’s already difficult to find parking on the street,” said Jordan, a student at Dal. “They already put up a lot of no parking signs lately.”

“I think a lot of people are getting frustrated that there’s nowhere to park around the campuses, both at Saint Mary’s and Dalhousie,” said Dalhousie student Michelle.

University spokeman Charles Crosby says Dal has implemented reserved lots and is encouraging students and staff to also use bus passes, car pooling and bicycles as some options to commute to campus.

Crosby says the university is continuously looking at the overall parking situation as part of the university’s broader transportation strategy.

“You’re constantly re-arranging that situation to best respond to the needs of the campus community,” said Crosby. “In this case there are some spots that are going away but we have opened up some prior to that.”

He says the university apologizes to students and employees for the inconvenience caused by the new building.
