Clearcutting to stop around Sandy Lake

It’s a happy ending for a group of concerned residents in Hammonds Plains.
The Sandy Lake Conservation Association has been protesting clearcutting around the lake and says a meeting they were finally able to arrange with the developer went better than expected.
Karen Robinson says she’s breathing a sigh of relief after the association met with developer George Armoyan and Bedford Coun. Tim Outhit.
Robinson says not only did Armoyan commit to hold off on clearcutting near the lake, he’s also promised to work with residents to protect the area.
“He wants us to be involved in the selection of the consultant that will draft three different scenarios and wants us to be hands on, which we’re very happy about,” said Robinson.
Robinson says residents tried to share their concerns with the developer and Halifax Regional Municipality multiple times, but after getting nowhere they held a protest in late August.
She says that’s what caught Armoyan’s attention.
“He was very apologetic. He said that had he known there was a problem he would not have done as much as he did,” said Robinson. “And the explanation was that he has many businesses and many staff and oftentimes, information doesn’t even reach him.”
Robinson says most of the 200 acres was cut, but there are still trees standing around the lake which they aim to protect.
She said the group’s only regret is that they didn’t take action sooner.
