OTTAWA, Ont. – At a ceremony at the Ernst and Young Centre Saturday afternoon, Ottawa’s new CFL team will reveal their name and logo.
Former players and more than 200 local minor football players will be on hand as the franchise unveils ‘The RedBlacks’, a name that has been rumoured for months.
Ottawa Sun Sports Writer Tim Baines says the new name the ‘RedBlacks’ hasn’t exactly been a hit, but the club is moving forward with it regardless.
“I think it’s certainly not a safe choice, they presented five names to focus groups and there was no overwhelming choice from those focus groups of any of the names – I personally like RedBlacks,” Baines said.
But regardless of the name or logo, Baines says the excitement around this team will catch on quickly.
“There’s a whole generation of people that really don’t even know the CFL in Ottawa, certainly their core audience, their future audience, are these kids who have never seen a CFL game in Ottawa,” Baines said.
Old fans of the Roughriders and Regnegades will likely be happy to see the team as well.
The RedBlacks will play at the new stadium built at Lansdowne Park starting in 2014.
