Hundreds of overnight winter parking ban tickets issued

A lot of people in Halifax Regional Municipality are paying parking tickets after the first go-round with the overnight winter parking ban.

Officers on patrol Wednesday night and early Thursday morning issued no less than 325 tickets to vehicles parked on streets overnight, even though there was little to no snow in the city core.

It was the first time this season, the city enforced the ban and Halifax Regional Police were kept busy.

Const. Pierre Bourdages said when the municipality makes the call to enforce the ban, the force brings on extra staff to handle the workload.

“There are five constables and a sergeant that are coming in, and they’re solely dedicated to this issue,” said Bourdages.

All of those officers are paid overtime.

No vehicles were towed, but police can and will if it’s deemed necessary.

Getting a ticket while the winter parking ban is in effect comes with a fine of $50.
