Bowater bailout package bound for public feedback

Members of the public who want to weigh in on the Bowater bailout package will have their chance today.

The deal has been formalized in a bill that gives the Region of Queens Municipality authority to reduce property taxes for the struggling mill.

The bill heads to the legislature’s Law Amendments committee Wednesday, where members of the public can have their say.

Liberal leader Stephen McNeil tells Metro Halifax lots of people have questions about the deal.

Premier Darrell Dexter announced the $50 million package earlier this month, saying he had to act to protect up to 2000 jobs on the south shore.

The opposition parties criticized the deal for its lack of a long-term guarantee.
