Nova Scotia students take recommendations to Ottawa

Around one-hundred Nova Scotia post secondary students are in Ottawa this week.

They’re there as part of a larger group of students trying to pitch some recommendations to Members of Parliament and Senators on how to create a high-quality and accessible system of post-secondary education in Nova Scotia and the country.

According to Statistics Canada, Nova Scoita has the third highest tuition costs in the country behind Ontario and New Brunswick.

Gabe Hoogers, the Nova Scotia representative of the Canadian Federation of Students tells News 95.7 a 3 per cent increase in tuition in the province this year is part of the reason the system needs changes.

“Our first recommendation is to create a post secondary education act that would create dedicated transfers from the federal government to provincial governments,” he says.”

He adds that’s important to Nova Scotians because we’re losing a lot of best brains to other parts of the country where school is cheaper.

Hoogers adds more expensive education doesn’t translate to better education.

Some of the other suggestions they’ll be proposing include increased funding for aboriginal students and more money for post grad research.

The group will also recommend better tracking of where money is going and if it’s helping and for more grants and scholarships to students who need it.

Hoogers is confident politicians will listen.

“We’ve got all the numbers, we’ve got all the rational and we have the public support to back us,” he explains.
