Occupy Ottawa continues over night

Ottawa – Hundreds of protesters were at Confederation Park on Saturday afternoon for the kick off of the Occupy Ottawa protest.

It was a mixed crowd at the protest; there were university students, families and even grandparents.

Some parents even brought their kids to the demonstration.

“For me this is really about a livable world for my children and their children,” said mother of four Tamara. “It’s time to find something workable and livable for everyone.”

Activists brought signs, banners and flags to the park.

Others brought instruments like drums and banjos to sing and play in the drizzly rain.

“This isn’t just for young people. It cuts across all ages,” said one grey-haired protester. “And if Ottawa hadn’t had one I would have gone to Toronto!”

The group held a general assembly in the afternoon and decided the occupation would continue at Confederation Park.

When it got dark in the evening, soggy protesters took out their tents and set up camp.

Activists said they want to occupy the park for as long as possible.

“This is symbolic of the workers taking back what they own and what they deserve,” said one activist pitching a tent.

Occupy Ottawa organizers said they hope the occupation will last for several days.
