Bayers Road widening plan put off for another year

Your local politicians have decided again not to make a decision on one of the big issues facing the city.

This time it’s about the controversial plan to widen Bayers Road approaching the 102. It’s part of a master plan for Halifax’s road network.

Councillor Jennifer Watts, who represents some of the residents who’d be affected by the Bayers Road plan, moved to take the widening out of the traffic plan and pass the rest of it. Instead, councillors deferred the whole thing until after a scheduled review of the entire Regional Plan.

Watts says that’s effectively left the road widening as a viable option, one she doesn’t like.

“To continue with this larger project, sort of in the back pocket, means we’re not really seriously going to have to look at the overall plan of how we move people in and off the peninsula,” said Watts.

It’ll be about a year before the plan is revisited, placing it around the same time as municipal elections.
