Fundraiser for quake victims in Japan

RICHMOND (NEWS1130) – A fundraiser is being held in Richmond this afternoon and all the money raised will directly help victims of the disaster in Japan.

The Lotus Light Charity Society’s Natural Disaster Fundraising Coordinator Ada Jang says the money will help buy water purification systems.  “The units can actually provide clean water to communities of 30,000 people, and that could last for a few years.”

The Canadian Medical Assistance Team had to leave Japan because it was unsafe.  After arriving home, they reported the clean water filter systems were needed the most.

Jang is hoping the team will be able to lead this project from here in BC.  “They’re appealing for $20,000 in donations, so they can actually by the water purification units.

Fundraising times:

2000 Supermarket – 8388 Capstan Way, Richmond
Empire Supermarket – 102-4600 No. 3 Road, Richmond

Both events are being held from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Fears of radiation

As workers continue to struggle to contain the damage at a nuclear power plant, there is word radiation is showing up in food and water.

Japan’s government says radiation levels in spinach and milk from farms near the facility exceed safety limits.

Higher-than-recommended amounts of radioactive iodine also showed up in drinking water near the plant.  Tiny amounts have also turned up in tap water in other places including Tokyo.

There is also word the back-up power systems at the Fukushima power plant were not properly protected and were submerged when the tsunami hit.

Electricians are trying to connect a new power line in hopes of restarting the plants’ cooling systems, as they struggle to keep the reactors from overheating and possibly causing a meltdown.
