Canadian Red Cross passes $1 million in donations

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Canadian Red Cross says it’s ready to help Japan at a moment’s notice.  The group has already raised more than $1 million.

Bas Brusche with the organization says that’s an overwhelming amount of money, especially since the quake happened just a few days ago.

He tells News1130 some people may think a developed country like Japan doesn’t need as much support as Haiti did last year.  “The number of people directly affected, although massive, compared to Haiti is relatively small.  But still, this is an overwhelming disaster that needs our support.”

Brusche adds that the Japanese government has said they don’t need the Red Cross’ support right now.  He expects that to change over the next couple of days.

Rogers, the parent company of News1130, is helping the Red Cross raise money.  You can donate online or text ASIA to 30333 to make a one-time $5 donation.
