Halifax Mayor Peter Kelly is expressing concern about the northern Japanese port city of Hakodate which is Halifax’s twin city.
About 30,000 people were evacuated from the city as a two-metre tidal wave ripped through the area.
Kelly says he will consider how Halifax can assist its sister city in the aftermath of the disaster.
Halifax twinned with Hakodate in 1982 and each year the city sends Hakodate a Christmas tree.
